Kerala is blessed with many temples known for its size, artistic ingenuity and divine influence.
Porur Shiva temple is such a Great Temple (മഹാ ക്ഷേത്രം) known for its divine effect.
The deity is believed to be dedicated by “Kharan” (ഖരൻ) for the good of humanity and was worshipped by sacred saints for years.
The temple is believed to be about 2000 years ago.
This holy place was adobe of saints who stayed here for their meditative life and "Kharan" chose this place to dedicate a Shiva temple here.
During this prehistoric time, Mahavishnu was worshipped here and a temple for mahavishnu can be seen to the east of Temple pond.
Naveekarana Kalashams:
To restore the spiritual essence of the deity, “Naveekarana Kalashams” at the Shiva Temple were held in Malayalam year 1059 and later in 1127
DhwajaPrathishta (ധ്വജപ്രതിഷ്ഠ) - Dedication of the Flag:
For any Great Temple, the flag in front of the temple is an essential element which enhances the fame of the temple.
DhwajaPrathishta for Porur Shiva temple was held in the year 1976.
